The extension doubles the museum’s footprint with added galleries and social spaces, which are concealed behind a facade that was designed to have a unique appearance compared to its blocky predecessor.
Controversy over the development of White House continued this week, as Commission of Fine Arts chair Rodney Mims Cook Jr suggested swapping the building’s Ionic columns for Corinthian to match the in-progress ballroom extension.
Also as part of US president Donald Trump’s revamp of the White House, architecture studio AECOM unveiled its design for a subterranean visitor screening centre , which would be built under the nearby Sherman Park.
Elsewhere in the USA, architecture studio Edward Peck Design revealed its proposal to add a translucent canopy to the Chicago Bears’ stadium in an effort to convince the NFL team to stay in the city.
The concept was developed to show how the existing stadium could be adapted to meet the need for a next-generation stadium, with a roof, expanded seating and an entertainment complex.
In other architecture news, Italian studio Stefano Boeri Interiors revamped a piazza outside the Colosseum in Rome.
The semicircular outdoor space features 44 raised stone benches, which were placed to mark the footprints of original columns that once stood on the ancient Roman site.
University of Edinburgh researchers made advances in “bio-upcycling” this week, when they successfully used bacteria to turn plastic waste into a Parkinson’s drug .
The process involved breaking down polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic and feeding it to genetically engineered E. coli bacteria, which built it back up again with a different molecular structure to form the drug L-DOPA.
Popular projects on Dezeen this week included a metal-clad home perched on steel stilts in Barcelona, a home extension in London with a timber-framed porch and a house in Saitama , Japan, that features moving walls.
